Exhibitions in the North

Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions Editor

From dawn-lit reveries to tender depictions of women, this month’s guide charts a season of art that is captivating, urgent and intimate.

The Songs the Morning Sang at Portico Library might turn you into a (very early) morning person, while the paintings in Caroline Walker: Mothering at The Hepworth Wakefield are as masterful as they are moving.

Independents Biennial reminds us that the Liverpool art scene goes beyond the city centre with exhibitions in all corners of Merseyside.

PINK hosts Ends are for yesterdays (not tomorrows) two days of art, performance and workshops about ecology and time. While we’re in Stockport we take a closer look at Stockroom, its newest cultural centre, which has a library, an exciting programme of events and great coffee.

Check out our guide to visual art at Manchester International Festival too, where we cover all of the unmissable exhibitions in this year’s programme, and Wild Uplands at Penistone Hill Country Park – four large-scale art commissions created as part of Bradford 2025.
