The luxury B&B 23 St Mary’s, located in the city centre near the historic City Walls gateway Bootham Bar, is of interest to those who appreciate fine, fancy décor, with nine rooms in a delightful doll’s house period style.

Set in a high-ceilinged Victorian townhouse, you’ll find Oriental rugs and Tiffany lamps. The wallpaper is full of birds and flowers but isn’t ‘chintzy’ or ‘flock’. The welcoming and intimate guest lounge holds an impressive marble fireplace, and there are even stained glass windows on the landings.

The rooms on offer include standard doubles or luxury four-posters, and aside from the beautiful décor, television with Netflix is available in most rooms, and there’s an en-suite shower in every room along with tea and coffee stations. Parking is available for guests booking direct, and guests are welcome in the lounge late into the evening.

Breakfast can be taken in the large breakfast room or in the small courtyard outside, and you have the option of cereals and fruit beside classic fry-ups made from locally sourced eggs, sausages and kippers. Orange juice and coffee are fresh, made on the day. Vegetarian and vegan options are available on request.

23 St Mary’s is located right in the centre, so nearby, you’ll find the Minster, with its beautiful rose windows and glorious history, and the York Art Gallery and Museum Gardens. You can also get up on to the City Walls at Bootham Bar, to take the amazing walking tour, which takes you all around the city.
