Food and Drink in the North

Ian Jones, Food and Drink Editor

It’s the Food and Drink Guide, late-June edition, and phwoar, what a scorcher. The only solution is cafes with outside seating, chilled champagne, and pubs named after vermin. And by magical coincidence, that’s exactly what we have for you lucky lot this week.

New openings, legendary cakes, soon-to-be-legendary small bites and ice-cold drinks available at each and every one of the list below. Don’t say we don’t care about your body temperature.

Grab a fan and keep your windows and curtains closed during the daytime – here’s this month’s food and drink guide for Manchester and the North.

Our top picks

Portfolio

Portfolio, 67-69 Bridge St, Manchester, M3 3BQ - Visit now

Portfolio is a powerful addition to Bridge Street, taking the swagger of the nearby Stow and throwing in some of the most memorable drinks and intricate eats you’re going to find in Manchester for a long time. An absolute must-visit for fizz-loving food adventurers.

Pigeon Beer Wanderer

Pigeon Beer Wanderer, Arch 7 Sheffield St, Manchester, M1 2ND - Visit now

Pigeon Beer Wanderer is an expertly put-together ale house from beer boffin, Joshua Lightfoot, based in an area no one in their right mind is calling the “Beermuda Triangle”.

Tibetan Kitchen at Chorlton Water Park

Tibetan Kitchen at Chorlton Water Park, Maitland Road, Chorlton Water Park, Manchester, M21 7WH - Visit now

As you leave Chorlton Water Park, you’re gently ushered toward the on-site Tibetan food shack, complete with mindfulness-led party bus. Don’t question it; it’s just Chorlton Chorltoning.

Pollen Bakery

Pollen Bakery, Cotton Field Wharf, 8 New Union St, Manchester, M4 6FQ - Visit now

Pollen is bakery first, café second. The space is all floor-to-ceiling glass and canal views, with seating outside the moment the sun appears. Which means now, so move quick. During our visit, the place was rammed with that refined Ancoats-adjacent crowd we all know and love.

Sexy Fish Manchester

Sexy Fish Manchester, 1 The Avenue, Deansgate, Manchester , M3 3AP - Visit now

Hold onto your liver, it’s Manchester Cocktail Week. It officially launches at Sexy Fish on Friday 3rd July, and takes in multiple venues across Spinningfields and the upstart St John’s district. Say what you like about Spinningfields, this part of the city has the highest number of mind-dazzling cocktails on offer in Manchester, and it’s not even close.

Top tip: go ice-based because, in case you haven’t noticed, it is scorching out.

San Carlo Cicchetti

San Carlo Cicchetti, 98-116 Deansgate, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M3 2GQ - Visit now

San Carlo has launched a Summer Spritz menu nationwide – think Aperol, Hugo and Limoncello, and signature pours like Carlo’s Cosmo and the Basil Paloma. All alongside a run of Amalfi-inspired seasonal dishes. The food varies by site, but we have it on good authority that Cicchetti (and other flagship sites) are offering sun-kissed delights such as white asparagus carbonara, lemon tagliolini with Italian sturgeon caviar, and chicken marinated in lemon, wild fennel, honey and chilli.

The Refuge

The Refuge, Oxford Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M60 7HA - Visit now

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is about to unveil its summer terrace takeover, transforming Refuge’s outdoor courtyard into an intriguingly named “margarita sanctuary”. Is this where orphaned margaritas go to be looked after by kindly barstaff? No, silly, it’s a summer-long icy boozeathon, backed up by sharing plates and live DJs. Party on, Kimpton.
