As we enter the year of the dragon why not step away from the large street parties and colourful festivities to appreciate some of the calmer sides of Chinese culture. As part of their Lunar New Year celebrations, the Bluecoat is hosting an Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy, In this workshop you’ll use traditions that dates back over 2000 years to create a large scale piece of calligraphy ready to take away and proudly hang on a wall.

Multidisciplinary artist Pei See Tong will be sharing their knowledge of how calligraphy has embedded itself as such a staple part of Chinese culture for so long. You will then be guided through techniques that have changed very little over dozens of centuries, to create your own beautiful artwork to be hung up in your home. You will be walked through the creation of your final piece step by step making it manageable for the most unexperienced beginners, while still enjoyable for those who are more advanced.

All materials are provided, you simply need to turn up ready to immerse yourself in this timeless art form, communication technique and discipline. There are morning and afternoon sessions available so do not worry about missing out, however, it is recommended to book early as spaces are limited.

Pei See Tong works across art forms incorporating performance, craft, music and video to create environments. Often their work comments on or includes elements of East Asian culture. Pei Tong also works as a movement director and performances often include mark making on paper.

Outside of the Introduction to Calligraphy workshop there is plenty to get involved with at the Bluecoat. Whether you’re looking for performance, exhibitions, workshops or just a really lovely place to enjoy a cup of tea in the centre of Liverpool, check out their website for details.
