Family things to do in the North
Shekina Rose, Families EditorSeptember is here and with it comes the first whispers of autumn. The leaves are just starting to turn, the air feels a little cooler and the north is packed with cultural treats and family fun. Whether you’re curious about culture, the natural world, or you’re interested in dodgy doctors from history, September (and beyond) has it all!
We’ll start with the culture. Japan Week is coming to Manchester from 4–9 September, celebrating the beauty and creativity of Japan.
For nature lovers and artists, visit Liverpool’s Bluecoat for Birds, Bugs and Botanicals of the Bluecoat (20 September–12 October). This free exhibition explores the hidden life of creatures and plants.
History buffs (and the slightly macabre) will want to check out Questionable Quackery at Leeds’ Thackray Museum of Medicine on 20 September. This fascinating talk explores some of the most bizarre and downright dangerous medical ‘cures’ from the past 300 years. Other eerie goings on in Leeds include the Ghosts of Temple Newsam Tour, taking place in October, just in time for Halloween.
For theatre-fans, Three Little Vikings sails into The Lowry on 28 September, packed with trolls, monsters, and Viking ships, the most peckish little caterpillar is scoffing his way across Leeds at The Hungry Caterpillar Show at Carriageworks Theatre and dance/theatre fans will be mesmerised at English National Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty.
Moving into 2026, our favourite nanny Mary Poppins is on her way to Liverpool, as well as some awful characters from our past with Horrible Histories – The Concert.
