Christmas Theatre and Concerts

Creative Tourist

A cultural night out over Christmas doesn’t have to come smothered in festive cheese – though if that’s what you’re after, it’s here too.

Families are, of course, well served, from a brand-new British musical at HOME to an Oscar-winning animated short with a live orchestral soundtrack at the RNCM. The Hallé, meanwhile, goes blockbuster with a Viking adventure and its sweeping score, played live to picture.

There’s plenty for grown-ups, too, with Sondheim’s spectacularly bad decisions, Tchaikovsky’s best-loved opera and a candlelit carol service with a few curveballs up its sleeve.

Some of the best bits won’t cost a penny, either; Aviva Studios is putting on two whole programmes of live music for free. And if all that goodwill starts to grate, there’s an evening of lying, accusing your neighbours and trying not to get eaten by werewolves over in Oldham. Merry Christmas.
