The Science and Industry Museum is brightening the holidays with a season of hands-on science, playful illusions and family-friendly discovery.

Across the Winter Holiday programme, visitors can explore the science of illumination through interactive activities designed for curious minds of all ages. Create shadowy portraits at the Silhouette Station, experiment with colourful projections in a shadow skyline, and catch live science shows where expert Explainers put your brain to the test with mind-bending illusions.

One part of the programme is only here for a little longer. Operation Ouch! Brains, Bogies and You closes on 4 January, making this your last chance to dive headfirst into its gloriously gross exploration of the senses. Journey through an ear canal slick with wax, squeeze past sticky snot and poke around inside a giant eyeball as hands-on games and challenges turn biology into something tactile, silly and surprisingly enlightening.

Rounding out the visit is Power Hall: The Andrew Law Gallery, the museum’s newly reopened permanent space celebrating Manchester’s industrial muscle. Home to iconic historic engines – from early locomotives to mighty steam machinery – the gallery brings the city’s engineering past vividly to life. Model railways and toy trains have been a staple under the Christmas tree for generations — visit Power Hall and see the real-life locomotives that inspired these childhood favourites. Be inspired by these iconic engines and create your own using super-sized building blocks in the Revolution Manchester gallery.

One museum, a full winter programme, and a final chance to catch one of its most popular family exhibitions before it closes.

A busy image created using generative AI. The image depicts a man at the centre with grey hair and rosy cheeks, surrounding him are fairies that appear to be created in his own image with multiple limbs and unique bodily proportions. Around them are hundreds of vials, microscopes and dated scientific equipment.
