UrbanArtistry turn their attention to South America this November, with a screening of 2022 street art doc Chile Estyle. The screening is UrbanArtistry’s fourth event at CULTPLEX, and this time organisers have invited the film’s director Pablo Aravena to provide both an introduction to the documentary and post-screening Q&A.

Chile Estyle looks back at the beginnings of street art in Chile’s in the late 1960s, contrasting its emergence with that of the scene in New York and the events of May ’68 in Paris. Through archive footage and intimate interviews Aravena shows how Chile’s unique tradition combined political murals and graffiti, tracing a path from the early pioneers through to the artists setting the pace today.

The director is careful to examine the cultural and political resonance of an artform that has always broken barriers and pushed boundaries. From huge vibrant murals to small hasty tags, Chile Estyle also offers a glimpse of the work itself, while showing us how street art has given voice to the working classes, women, and native people.
