One of the most exciting directors around – Miranda Cromwell (Death of a Salesman, Young Vic/ West End Transfer and Rockets and Blue Lights, Royal Exchange/ BBC Radio 3) – tackles this new play based on Christy Lefteri’s 2019 novel, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, winner of the Aspen Words award and one of The Times’ top three bestselling books of 2020. We’re thrilled that the performance visits The Lowry as a venue on its UK tour.

Writers Nesrin Alrefaai and Matthew Spangler will take Christy Lefteri’s bestselling novel from page to stage in this brand-new adaptation. Inspired by Lefteri’s real-life experience volunteering at a refugee centre in Athens, The Beekeeper of Aleppo explores the fallout from the Syrian war and the triumph of the human spirit.

A story about the connection between friends, families and strangers.

“I was scared of the bees at first, but now, they make me feel alive. They are like a society in complete harmony with itself. Not like people at all, but maybe what people have the potential to be.”

Nuri, a beekeeper lives with his wife, Afra, an artist in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo. They live a simple life – rich in family and friends – until the unthinkable happens. They are forced to flee when everything they live for is destroyed by war. On their terrifying journey, they must face the pain of their own unbearable loss alongside incredible peril, and above all – they must journey to find each other again. Compassionate and beautiful, this is a story about the connection between friends, families and strangers.

Nesrin Alrefaai and Matthew Spangler will take Christy Lefteri’s bestselling novel from page to stage.

Co-produced in association with Nottingham Playhouse and UK Productions, this promising new production brings together the teams behind the hugely successful stage adaptation of The Kite Runner, which recently opened on Broadway. Don’t miss out.
