A brilliant tribute to the disco era of the 1970s, Bombay Superstar is a brand new Bollywood musical coming to The Lowry.

With sizzling costumes and choreography, audiences will be transported to the Golden Age of Bollywood Cinema. With classic themes of love and betrayal, Bombay Superstar tells the story of a passionate romance between a fiery starlet, Laila and her married co-star, Sikandar.

Both performers star in blockbuster musicals – the type of show where beautiful damsels are rescued from the clutches of evil villains by dashing heroes. While Laila and Sikandar’s romance is initially ignited on stage – between the pop numbers and disco lights – the boundaries between performance and reality soon begin to blur. As the tension builds and the deceit is unveiled, will these star-crossed lovers find their happy ever after?

Described as a “catchy retro musical”, Bombay Superstar boasts an incredible cast. Directed by Sâmir Bhamra, who is renowned for his Bollywood-inspired work Bring on the Bollywood and Precious Bazaar, the show stars Nisha Aaliya, who featured in the BBC TV series Ghosts and Netflix’s The Girl on the Train, and Rav Moore, who has been described as the UK’s new Bollywood superstar.

Of the production, director Sâmir Bhamra told us, “It has taken over 15 years to realise this dream production about the larger-than-life stories from the flamboyant Indian film industry and to have the courage and the belief that it can be presented on stage in a cinematic style. We are adorning it with iconic Bollywood hits from the 70s and 80s when a fusion of orchestral Indian music and international sounds created youthful upbeat rhythms.”

A vibrant and exciting evening out for the whole family, Bombay Superstar will be delivered in English and sung in Hindi, with subtitles throughout the show.
