Too much moo? Not enough room? A Squash and a Squeeze is coming to The Lowry this August and it’s everything we could have hoped for and more. Get ready for a delightful dose of farmyard chaos as the much-loved tale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler makes its way from page to stage in a fantastic musical adaptation for children and their grown-ups.

In a co-production between Little Angel Theatre and The Lowry, A Squash and a Squeeze tells the story of a little old lady who lives alone in a perfectly nice, quiet cottage. But naturally, it’s not enough – it just feels too small! In comes one very wise old man with a solution so ludicrous it might just work. His advice to the old lady is to invite a parade of noisy, scratchy, flappy animals into her house and see what happens. Spoiler alert – things do not get calmer, not at first, anyway!

This one-hour performance is brought to life with beautiful puppetry and catchy original songs, adapted for the stage by Olivier-nominated duo Barb Jungr and Samantha Lane. It’s perfect for children aged 3 to 8, funny, sweet, and a great introduction to theatre, with just enough absurdity to keep little ones giggling and grown-ups smiling. And it’s got a gorgeous underlying message too (of course it does). At the show’s core is the timeless message that sometimes, less really is more – and sometimes we all need to be reminded of that.

Come for the delightful story and leave with a newfound appreciation for personal space.

Catch A Squash and a Squeeze at The Lowry between Tuesday 5 – Sunday 24 August 2025.
