A new video work on display at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery highlights the city’s rebellious history and brings it right into the present day.

Chloë Brown is a local artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including international biennials. Her well-established oeuvre is based on a range of media, including sculpture, drawing and video.

A Soft Rebellion in Paradise reflects the artist’s interest in everyday acts such as eating and dancing as forms of liberation, through subversion. Made by an all female team, the film features 200 women gathered in Sheffield’s Paradise Square, performing the aforementioned ‘soft rebellions’ like clapping, chanting the words of a poem by Geraldine Monk or being silent. The action is soundtracked by a score created by DIE HEXEN.
