Cocktail-lovers should make their way to The Maven, but keep your eyes peeled – this stylish cocktail bar is a true hidden gem, with no signage and subdued lighting giving it a real prohibition-era look and feel. Located on one of Leeds city centre’s busiest bar strips, this is the place where late night party vibes meet with exquisite cocktails.

Dancing under the disco balls here is a requisite, with live DJs that bring the energy all night long. Follow the newly lit up staircase and enjoy some of the best late night parties that Leeds has to offer. With a lively what’s on calendar packed with regular guest selectors and big bank holiday blow outs, there’s always something going on at The Maven.

This is not your bog standard cocktail bar, that’s for sure.

On the drinks menu, you’ll find a list of carefully curated cocktails made with only the finest quality ingredients. Exploring “synergy and surprise”, the list here takes inspiration from the team’s favourite ingredients and flavours and gives you the choice of two each time: one showcasing classic combinations in new and unexpected ways, and another designed to delight the palate with unusual and unexpected pairings.

Highlights include rhubarb and lavender, melon and Parmesan, strawberry and artichoke, and peach with black pepper. Only available at The Maven, these unique and creative cocktails are sure to get your tastebuds going and inspire you to want to work your way through the whole list. This is not your bog standard cocktail bar, that’s for sure.

Hosts regular cocktail making masterclasses, led by its expert bartending team

Elsewhere, for non-cocktail drinkers, there is also a hand selected list of wines and Champagne, as well as a short list of beers that span craft favourites and popular international lager imports like Modelo, Moretti, Brixton Reliance Pale Ale, and Pacifico.

For those who want to get truly stuck in here, The Maven offers a unique cocktail tasting experience. Inspired by a chef’s tasting menu, the team has carefully put together a special list, to be drunk in sequence, that shows off their finest and most innovative creations. The bar also hosts regular cocktail making masterclasses, led by its expert bartending team, giving you the chance to perfect your skills under the watchful guidance of some of the best mixologists in the city.

A fixture in Leeds since 2011, this cocktail speakeasy is one of the city’s oldest prohibition style bars and is a must visit when planning a night out on the town.

Theatre in Manchester and the North
Theatre in the North

This season’s theatre is gloriously eclectic: from radical cabaret and reinvented classics to new musicals and boundary-pushing performance.

Detail of an abstract sculpture, with burned materials and rusty chicken wire at the centre, with rusted metal bars bent around it.
Exhibitions in the North

Chocolate fountains, beautiful batiks and medieval marginalia - this month's supersized Exhibitions Guide has it all.

Literature Events in the North

The autumn leaves might be falling already, but the harvest is plentiful as the live literature scene gets back into the swing of things after a summer break...

Cinema in the North

This month we recommend a season of Film noir, cult Australian movies and a huge celebration of DIY community cinema.
