Forever on the precipice of closure due to mystifying noise complaints from locals who have knowingly moved into a flat metres away from a music venue, Night & Day Cafe must be protected at all costs. This characterful and timelessly cool Oldham Street venue is a vital one for emerging bands and music lovers alike.

Opened in 1991, Night & Day Cafe on Oldham Street is a bit dingy, a bit scruffy, but too atmospheric to be classed as a dive bar. It plays host to an exhausting array of gigs throughout the year, and has been there right at the start of many now-arena-touring bands, from Arctic Monkeys to Elbow.

As well as live music, keep an eye out for regular and one-off club nights, including the weekly Loose Joints, which showcases the bar’s favourite artists behind the decks every Saturday. During the day, the venue also serves food (breakfasts, sandwiches, wraps and burgers) at prices more reasonable than you’ll find elsewhere in the Northern Quarter.

Want to see our round-up of the best music venues in Manchester (Night & Day obviously included)? Head here.
