Cronenberg’s potent and prescient sci-fi thriller remains one of the director’s greatest achievements. Like Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange it considers the effects of screen violence whilst also offering a Marshall McLuhan-inspired analysis of media domination. Debbie Harry would have a very credible acting career (excelling in Hairspray and Heavy), but this is arguably the highpoint of her non-Blondie career.
