Sandbox_Magnetic Resonance with Kathy Hinde
Always double check opening hours with the venue before making a special visit.
Our world is shaped by forces we can’t see. Magnetism is one of them. It underpins navigation systems, helps us generate power and, in one of its most mysterious roles, guides migratory birds across continents. Sandbox begins by tuning in to that invisible force.
Sandbox is a new event series from Modus Arts. It’s an open, informal gathering where leading sound practitioners share work-in-progress and meet fellow artists. Curated and facilitated by Vicky Clarke (aka SONAMB) and Wajid Yaseen, the series sets out to create a space for experimentation, exchange and attentive listening in the sound art community.

The first edition centres on audiovisual artist Kathy Hinde and her new work-in-progress Magnetic Resonance. Developed during a research residency at iii (Instrument inventors) in The Hague, the piece features a trio of illuminated sonic pendulums set into motion by the invisible push and pull of magnetic fields.
Hinde’s starting point is the mysterious way birds and other migratory species navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field. Despite decades of research, the precise mechanism remains elusive, with theories pointing towards a light-sensitive process in the eye linked to the cryptochrome gene, and even the possibility of quantum entanglement guiding the journey.
Known for creating works that sit somewhere between kinetic sound sculpture and newly invented instrument, Hinde combines handmade objects, electronics and a blend of digital and analogue systems. Following Magnetic Resonance, Hinde will open up her process, tracing the thread from migratory birds to magnetic fields to the handmade instruments in front of us.
An evening where unseen forces become light, motion and sound.
