Opera North: Susanna

Opera North joins forces with Phoenix Dance Theatre for Susanna – a bold reimagining of Handel’s oratorio that still feels fiercely relevant today. First performed in 1749, the story follows a young woman targeted by two powerful men determined to destroy her reputation. As society swallows their lies, Susanna clings to her truth, her resilience resonating across the centuries.
Directed by Olivia Fuchs with choreography by Marcus Jarrell Willis, the production confronts gender-based violence and the corrupting influence of power. Handel’s score, rich with lyrical arias and powerful choral passages, provides the heartbeat. With integrated visual vernacular in every performance, this collaboration is as inclusive as it is urgent.
Recommended for ages 12+, Susanna is one of three Opera North productions heading to Lowry this November, alongside La Bohème and the family-friendly Big Opera Mystery.
