BBC Philharmonic: Masters of Reinvention
Will Fulford-Jones
The death in March 2016 of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies – born in Salford, educated in Manchester – deprived British music of one of its greatest assets and fiercest advocates. Tonight, Håkan Hardenberger joins John Storgårds and the orchestra to pay tribute with a performance of Max’s terrific Trumpet Concerto. The concert begins with Nielsen’s dynamic overture to Maskarade, then ends with Shostakovich’s vast Tenth Symphony: packed with coded messages, it’s an intense, compelling essay on life and death under Stalin.
