Into the Melting Pot at Manchester Jewish Museum: A photograph showing a theatre stage. On the right side we can see a woman in a pink hijab with a travel bag in her hand. She has a yellow star pinned to her black blouse. She looks concerned. In the background there is a group of 5 musicians playing medieval instruments.

Join Manchester Jewish Museum for Into the Melting Pot, a screening of a concert play developed by groundbreaking theatre and music company The Telling. Take a seat in the Museum’s beautiful synagogue and be transported back to 15th-century Andalucia.

At twilight on her final night in Seville, a Jewish woman lights the lamps. Forced to leave Spain and set sail for an uncertain future, her story resonates with people affected by politics and war today. She tunes into the voices of a community of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women from across the Spanish peninsula.

Raising themes around integration, love, heritage and racial identity, women’s stories are played out to a soundtrack of plaintive Sephardic songs and lively medieval music, with full staging and stunning lighting.

The film will be followed by a talk with creator Clare Norburn and flautist and teacher Sarah Atter, discussing the project and their recent workshops with the museum’s Songwriting Group.

Into the Melting Pot is happening as part of Manchester Jewish Museum’s Synagogue Scratch Season.
