Take a trip to The Lowry and discover the enchanting world of Hansel and Gretel in this pop-up outdoor performance by Opera North. Humperdinck’s operatic fairytale offers the perfect opportunity for the whole family to experience the magic of opera.

Experience the magical twists and turns of the plot and meet a host of fascinating characters.

Journey into the woods, experience the magical twists and turns of the plot and meet a host of fascinating characters along the way. Don’t stray too far from your tour guide and be sure to watch out for the evil witch – you can’t be sure what trickery is waiting for you.

Performed by a small group of professional singers and accompanied by accordion, Hansel & Gretel tells the story of a brother and sister who wander into the idyllic yet dangerous world of the forest. Encountering the Sandman, the Dew Fairy and the most terrifying of all, the Witch, Humperdinck’s magical score conjures up the fantastical worlds in the story.

This mini open-air production offers the perfect introduction to opera for all ages.

Opera North General Director Richard Mantle said:

“We are extremely pleased to be able to be taking our first step back to sharing music and performance with audiences in villages, towns and cities across the North of England, and to be returning to The Lowry, albeit outdoors.

We remain committed to our purpose and, whatever challenges we face, Opera North will continue to use music to create extraordinary experiences every day for and with the communities we serve. Live or digitally, in classrooms, theatres, homes and public spaces; we will continue to share music with people of all ages and backgrounds.”

Running at around 40 minutes, we love that Opera North continue to challenge the way that opera is traditionally performed and received. This mini open-air production offers the perfect introduction to opera for all ages.
