A mother and daughter switching bodies might sound like a nightmare, but in Freaky Friday, it’s the perfect recipe for festive fun. Arriving at HOME this Christmas for its UK stage premiere, the show brings the beloved story – first told in Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel and later in hit Disney films – to life. Expect a fresh score, laugh-out-loud comedy and just the right amount of seasonal sparkle.

Offering the perfect alternative to panto, this is top-notch family entertainment with a twist.
The plot is gloriously simple: Katherine, an overworked mother, and Ellie, her teenage daughter, magically swap bodies for a single day. Suddenly forced to navigate each other’s worlds, they stumble through the chaos of high school cliques, teenage crushes and parental responsibilities, all while desperately trying to undo the switch before time runs out. Along the way, both discover empathy for the other, learning self-acceptance and rekindling the bond that makes their relationship unbreakable.

This vibrant new musical is directed by Andy Fickman (Heathers the Musical), with a book by Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights), music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey – the Tony Award-winning duo behind the critically acclaimed Next to Normal. Together, they reimagine Rodgers’ iconic body-swap tale with a fresh contemporary score of soaring ballads and ensemble numbers – this is feel-good festive theatre.

For HOME, presenting Freaky Friday as its Christmas show marks another milestone in bringing international hits and UK premieres to Manchester. Recommended for ages 10+, it’s a chance for families, musical theatre fans and Disney nostalgists to come together, swap the panto traditions for something a little different, and enjoy a story that continues to delight.

Hilarious, heartfelt and packed with catchy tunes, Freaky Friday offers the perfect family Christmas night out – a joyful celebration of perspective, connection and second chances.
