The comedy production/promotion powerhouse team A Lovely Time have stepped things up a gear. Not content with showcasing some of the best up-and-coming stand-up acts over the past few years, now they’ve set their sights on up-ending the festival circuit.

A vital alternative to the bloated, expensive Edinburgh Festival

These days the Edinburgh Festival is a bloated, expensive beast and A Lovely Day looks like the first stepping stone in providing a vital alternative for budding comedians who don’t have parents with deep pockets, not to mention comedy fans who don’t have a spare few grand lying around.

Held at the always-friendly Cultplex, this is a one-day comedy festival in Manchester, showcasing the most exciting voices in stand-up. The line-up includes Edinburgh Fringe Award nominees, hot TV names and some of the most exciting new voices in comedy.

You can buy tickets for individual shows or there are a limited number of day passes available for just £20, which gives you access to all five shows. Here’s the running order for the day:

  • 1.30pm Vittorio Angelone
  • 3pm William Stone
  • 4.30pm Spencer Jones
  • 6pm Erika Ehler
  • 8pm Rachel Fairburn

Theatre in the North

This season’s theatre is gloriously eclectic: from radical cabaret and reinvented classics to new musicals and boundary-pushing performance.

Cinema in the North

This month we recommend a season of Film noir, cult Australian movies and a huge celebration of DIY community cinema.
