Things to Do in Altrincham

Sarah-Clare Conlon, Literature Editor

Plan a day out down Altrincham way, and you’ll soon find that one day isn’t nearly enough. Getting there is easy on the tram, or how about cycling along the Bridgewater Canal – keep going and you’ll hit Dunham Massey, complete with packs of deer and its own craft beer. Green space and fresh air is in abundance – Grade II-listed Stamford Park, for example, has been welcoming visitors since 1880, while nearby Bowdon’s Denzell Gardens and The Devisdale are perfect for soaking up autumn colour and enjoying spring bulbs, with snowdrops a speciality.

Prefer the great indoors? Book a table in the historic and award-winning Market House and dig into all manner of freshly prepared dishes using locally grown produce – nine stalls include Honest Crust and their famous pizzas and Tender Cow with their steak-frites. There’s a vast choice of food and drink indies outside the building too – from artisan cheesemongers and regional piemakers in the covered Alty Market (open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 8am-3pm) to outlets serving up Spanish tapas, Moroccan brunches and Belgian pours dotted around the pedestrian town centre.

Top-notch homewares, handmade arts and crafts, ethically and sustainably sourced gifts, and pre-loved books and vinyl can also go on your shopping list, while the Stamford Quarter has high-street brands covered. Altrincham is also big on things to do, and you can get hands-on with cookery courses, pottery classes and music workshops or shake a leg swimming or skating just a stone’s throw from the station. Find out more in our guide to our favourite attractions in Altrincham and our round-up of the tours and activities worth checking out.
