This independent bookstore and café in Farsley, Leeds, boasts a great selection of adult and children’s books as well as cute cards and gifts for all ages. Opened by a former travel industry professional with twenty years under her belt, the bookshop is a product of the 2020 travel ban, and the realisation of a lifelong dream for owner Amanda Truman.

Filled to bursting with books that she and the team personally love, readers can browse titles spanning fiction, art, music and craft, poetry, science, biography, food and drink, politics, travel (naturally, given her past career), and more. There are plenty of fiction and non fiction books for children aged 0 to twelve on the shelves, as well as a good quality young adult section, and a range of graphic novels suited to all ages.

Home to a lively event calendar bringing regular storytimes, book readings, launches, and literary festivals.

The shop’s knowledgeable staff are on hand to offer you recommendations, whether for yourself or as a figt, and they can also source some rare signed copies and special editions on pre order. On top of this, Truman Books also has a web shop that distributes worldwide – so even if you leave Leeds, you can still enjoy everything it has to offer online.

As well as stocking a range of interesting books, Truman Books is home to a lively event calendar bringing regular storytimes, book readings, launches, and literary festivals to Farsley throughout the year. On top of this, it also hosts pop-up events outside the book store, including quizzes, author talks, and a monthly book club social at nearby wine bar Cargo Wines, with very reasonably priced tickets for £15 that include the price of your book and a welcome wine, beer or soft drink.

There’s also a friendly café offering coffee, tea and cake here as well as soft drinks and juice for the little ones, encouraging you to linger a little longer and really feel at home. Perfect for those looking for a comfortable, friendly space to catch up with friends, or to sit and enjoy your book with a cappuccino and a sweet treat, it’s a great addition to the shop. Next time you’re in Farsley, make sure to give Truman Books a look in.
