texture is an independent gallery in Ardwick, first opened in May 2025. It’s located in the middle of a busy industrial estate – not an unusual location for a grassroots art organisation but certainly the only one in this area. There are clear instructions on the website but the walk through the estate is a little longer than you might think – follow the deep blue flags that will take you right to the door.

Independent curator Will Marshall is the man behind texture’s existence and exciting programme of exhibitions. Previously at Paradise Works, he decided to open his own space to diversify the pool of artists exhibiting in Manchester. While providing a platform for local artists is key, inviting creatives from all over the country opens up new dialogues and this is what texture aspires to – pairing local talent with creatives from across the UK to spark unexpected connections.

The gallery’s launch exhibition included Craig Coulthard, Candice Dehnavi and Errol Theunissen with each one occupying a wall in their own tiny solo show. The next, Duel, is a display of only two paintings and a purpose-built viewing platform to enable the audience to sit, look and contemplate, playing with the very format of the exhibition.

Brave curatorial choices are a conscious decision made by Marshall who enjoys the element of risk in creating a programme that defies audience expectations. The gallery will unfortunately be forced to move out of their current site at the end of 2025, but this also fuels its mission to use the space for creative experimentation while while it exists in its current form.

Launched with minimal fanfare and cryptic social media teasers, the intrigue continues with the gallery providing little information about the artists and works themselves. The little that you can see is clear and concise – there are no press releases littered with art speak or shiny Instagram reels. You’ll just have to go and take a look yourself.
