Artisan meat experts Mettricks Butchers have been chopping up a storm across Glossop for many years, and now the rest of the country is waking up to their top-quality produce.

Earlier in the year, the locally loved butchers won one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for their pork and caramelised onion pie. Interest piqued and tastebuds prepped, I sourced one of these coveted items and dove in. (Note: I grew up in Wigan, so, naturally, I’m something of a pie boffin.)

First off, these aren’t the piddly little pies you might pick up in a corner shop. This is a mighty pie, designed to be cut into slices and served up to multiple people. The pastry is a mouthwatering golden brown colour, with a welcome shine. The pork? It’s as pure as it gets – no unnecessary additives, filler or other nonsense – this is a proper pie, for proper pie-eaters.

Yes, it’s delicious, and you can buy your own direct from Mettricks Butcher. Simply pop into the branch on High Street West in Glossop or use click and collect via their website to skirt the risk of them selling out, which they invariably will.

Want this and other meaty goods to arrive at your doorstep? Fear not, they do deliver, but for lucky locals only. However, it’s worth contacting them to see if they deliver to your address, especially if you fancy ordering a big box of farm-reared treats.

Speaking of which, their tandoori lamb lollipops also received plenty of praise at those self-same awards. I’ll be making a visit at some point to bag some for myself, especially for BBQ season, if/when it ever happens.
