Our inaugural visit to Kargo MKT takes us through the Horn of Africa, with bright, colourful Ethiopian and Eritrean food courtesy of House Of Habesha. We visit shortly after New Year for those countries, which falls on September 11, and means it’s actually 2018 according to their calendar. (Mental note: warn them that some crazy stuff is about to go down in a couple of years.)
As a street food vendor, House Of Habesha is quite the emerging empire, with locations as far afield as London and Sheffield, plus a couple more in and around Manchester.
Their bit-of-everything Full House platter is a decent place to begin, offering a selection of dishes at a reasonable price, plus a big swirl of that pancake-like injera bread. The spinach curry is a worthy opening act, more gentle than you’d expect but pleasingly wholesome.
The menu is largely vegan and vegetarian, although there’s lamb and chicken curry on the menu for all you naughty carnivores. The chicken is another worthy option, thanks to the berbere spice giving it a warm, smokiness that fits well with the spongy bread.
There are a few Westernised dishes on the menu, such as burgers and the very appealing sounding (and coronary-inducing) fried lamb loaded fries, but they’ll have to wait for another day. It’s a good indication of what both House Of Habesha and Kargo are all about – pushing boundaries and offering a wider variety than its noisy neighbours, but never excluding anyone from the party.
