Liverpool’s traditionally student’y Smithdown Road has, in recent years, become the go-to location for some of the city’s loveliest businesses. Dead Ink Bookshop is top of that list, with its curated selection of publications, exclusively from independent publishers: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children’s books, YA, graphic novels and quick reads. You’ll also find zines, tiny niche publications (usually by the till) and audiobooks in a card which, let’s be honest, is a great gift idea. Dead Ink’s staff love to read and recommend, therefore one wall is dedicated to current recommendations, depending on a theme or the season.

The bookshop comes from the same stable as the fiercely independent Dead Ink Books press. The shop is more than a place to buy books—it’s a space for literary discovery and community. Despite the cosy size, the bookshop frequently hosts literary events, talks and discussions featuring a variety of authors whose books are available in the shop. Keep an eye on their social media pages for news of events – they attract a passionate community and offer a chance to meet some of today’s most exciting writers.

Not sure where to start? Don’t be afraid to ask, the staff really do know their books very well.

The space is modern and inviting and, of course there are hot drinks and snacks, adding to the lovely atmosphere and the intoxicating smell of books and freshly brewed coffee.

Whether you’re an avid reader, a casual browser, or an aspiring writer, Dead Ink Bookshop is a must-visit for anyone interested in literature that moves beyond the mainstream
