Happening as part of Lowry’s 25th anniversary celebrations, Gods of Salford is a brand-new performance that reimagines Greek myths through the lens of modern-day Salford.

Partnering with award-winning Northern theatre company Not Too Tame feels like the perfect way to mark a quarter-century of Lowry. Championing creativity, community and young people sits at the heart of the theatre’s work, and this electrifying production celebrates all of that and more.

Greek mythology collides with Northern working-class stories of defiance and resilience in Not Too Tame’s high-octane, no-holds-barred style. Directed by Jimmy Fairhurst, Gods of Salford follows a group of young Olympians as they dare to take charge of their own futures – confronting the gods who seek to control their lives. Perhaps most powerfully, 25 young Salfordians will take to the stage alongside three professional actors, with more working behind the scenes in technical roles – a brilliant example of Lowry’s ongoing investment in its local community.

Blending ancient legend with the real struggles of today, Gods of Salford is a bold showcase of identity, resilience and raw creativity. Shaped by a fearless, inclusive theatre-making process, the production places lived experience front and centre.

Not Too Tame are known for breaking boundaries and providing a platform for working-class voices. Associate artists of Shakespeare North Playhouse and Derby Theatre, the company’s previous productions – including A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night – were celebrated for their energy and inventive staging. With five-star reviews and a growing fanbase across the UK, they’ve built a reputation for turning classic theatre into a great night out.

Of Gods of Salford, director Jimmy Fairhurst told us, “Gods of Salford is our ethos in action. We’re delighted and honoured to have been commissioned by Lowry to create a show that reimagines Salford as Olympus, bringing big, bold characters and socially relevant art as a great night out. This production also allows us to ‘send the elevator back down’, providing an incredibly diverse group of Salfordians the opportunity to experience professional on and off-stage opportunities, working alongside professionals from similar working class backgrounds to theirs, whilst being treated not as amateurs, not as community performers, but as Not Too Tame professional artists. The results so far have been astounding, and we’re only getting started! This show is the ‘bat signal’ to working class audiences and potential theatre makers of the future that this IS for you.”

Recommended for ages 10+, Gods of Salford is part of a packed year of events celebrating Lowry’s 25th anniversary. With free family activities, affordable tickets and something for everyone, this powerful production captures the spirit of the city — and the power of local people coming together to tell their stories. A proper celebration, on and off the stage.
