We’re all starting to become more aware of the incredible world of fungus that we live in. With mycelial blankets on forest floors that act as the internet of trees and groundbreaking discoveries of how we haven’t even began to tap into the potential uses of mushrooms in medicine, these fascinating life forms are a lot of fun to learn about. In this guided walk, families and novice mushroom hunters will explore the grounds to find the fungal treasures hidden in the crevices, corners and cracks of Temple Newsam’s large gardens.
The walk is around three miles long and covers woodlands, grasslands and a variety of habitats, so plenty of fungal variety to be found. You’ll have an introduction to picking, collecting and identifying mushrooms with advice on edibility as well. The walk is reasonably accessible but does involve gradients and off-road conditions, walkers with access needs are advised to call in advance to discuss specifics. The group will stop for refreshments in the cafe on their return.
