As part of the Hallé’s John Adams Festival, audiences are invited to hear players and guest artists perform three classic Adams works for smaller ensembles, in the intimate surroundings of the RNCM.

This afternoon concert shows John Adams pulling minimalism off its pedestal and into everyday America. Chamber Symphony is Schoenberg spliced with Saturday-morning cartoons: tightly wound modernism colliding with pop culture. Hallelujah Junction and John’s Book of Alleged Dances push the idea further, making virtuosity a thrill rather than a barrier, and showing Adams as the playful experimenter.

This traditional boozer, surrounded by imposing flats and university buildings, was taken over by Trof (of the Deaf Institute fame). The Sally, as the regulars call it, hosts an energetic, arty crowd – and its recently expanded outside area is another good reason to visit.
