Box Of Tricks Theatre: Danesha at The Lowry
Kristy Stott, Theatre EditorThe ever-brilliant Box of Tricks bring Danesha, a new coming-of-age play exploring identity, self -acceptance and Black queer joy to The Lowry this October.
This joyous new work will premiere to Salford audiences ahead of a UK tour to Leeds Playhouse, The Arts Centre, Edge Hill University, Blackpool Grand, Chester Storyhouse and Unity Theatre, Liverpool.
Written by emerging Manchester-born playwright Stefanie Reynolds, Danesha charts the story of a young Prestonian woman, who, itching to escape the nightclubs of her hometown, hatches a plan for a night out in Manchester with her Preston pals. Having persuaded her friends (while gently fabricating the truth for her father), Danesha finds the most exclusive Manchester venues – with the sickest music and vibes – for a party like no other.
However, the night takes an intriguing turn when Danesha meets Her, a mesmerising female stranger. Those longstanding feelings around not fitting in and not knowing anything about her maternal ancestry and island heritage, become startlingly pressing. And, questioning everything she thought she was – her identity in a state of flux – Danesha starts on a journey to discover her authentic self.
Box of Tricks are a Manchester-based award-winning theatre company that stands committed to developing and producing the best young talent. We love that the company champions young playwrights, giving them a platform to tell the stories that are important to young people. Building on this, as part of the autumn tour, Danesha will visit six schools around the North West to engage and inspire young theatre-goers too.
Of the show, playwright Stefanie Reynolds told us, “I’m beyond thrilled and delighted that the world is finally getting to meet Danesha. I hope this play resonates with audiences, I hope people find the joy and magic that Danesha brings, and I also hope you’re able to see yourself and feel a little less alone”
Running at 75 minutes long, Danesha promises to be a celebration of race and Blackness, queerness and identity, and up-and-coming young theatrical talent. Don’t miss out.
