Dutch artist Boris Maas responds to the work of Victorian painter John Atkinson Grimshaw in a new exhibition of light installations and photographs.

Atkinson Grimshaw is known for moody landscapes and cityscapes, often with moonlight or the light of the dawn giving the scenes an eerie atmosphere. Boris Maas uses a contemporary approach to recreate this feeling in the space of The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery.

The exhibition consists of two ‘Acts’ by Maas, before which visitors can encounter two original paintings by Atkinson Grimshaw. Act I is The nightlife series which includes nocturnal photographs of the painted locations. Act II, You Have seen nothing yet is a glass mobile in which coloured lenses are suspended, inspired by the painter’s colour palette.

Part of the Smeaton300 festival, this commission has been supported by LEEDS 2023 (Leeds Culture Trust) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the UK.
