The Portico Library is a lesser known gem of cultural fascination sandwiched between Manchester Art Gallery and Piccadilly Gardens. Their regularly changing exhibitions and unique collections fuel a programme of workshops and talks in an oasis of tranquility which lives amongst the beating heart of a city.  Take a deeper dive into the themes of an artist’s work, see the human side to researching an exhibition or get hands-on with the techniques of their craft in a workshop.

Previously the library has seen life drawing, music and craft workshops in response to specific exhibitions. However, they also have a regular book binding workshop which proves to be ever popular. In most workshops, you’ll receive tea or coffee on arrival before taking a step-by-step approach to creating something beautiful, whilst being guided by experts.

In the bookbinding workshops you’re shown how to create the lesser-known milkman’s Magic Wallet, a reversible and fascinating way of storing receipt sized pieces of paper. You’ll also learn how to create a Map Fold, a fold that allows you to present whole page images in a more compact version. It’s a great tool to have in your skill set when wanting to be economic with space. Pop-up invitation or greetings cards will also be covered as well as the intriguing Exploding Box. Whether you’re making gifts for friends and family or just for yourself, you can be sure that the hours spent focusing on such a relaxing skill in such beautiful surroundings is a treat in itself.

For those more curious to listen than make, check out the Library’s talks. These can vary from witchcraft, to social justice movements, to decolonising cataloging through to children’s fairytales. Each talk welcomes artists, authors, thinkers and philosophers with something important to share into the striking surroundings of the library.
