This Christmas, A Christmas Carol gets a spine-tingling makeover at HOME Manchester. Adam Z. Robinson’s solo show with The Book of Darkness & Light turns Dickens’ familiar festive tale into something thrillingly new, blending gothic chills with heart-warming holiday spirit.

Step into the foggy streets of Victorian London as Robinson guides you through Scrooge’s world, past, present and future. The miserly miser, the joyous Tiny Tim and the ghostly visitors we all know and fear, are brought to life in a performance that makes you question yourself every year. Robinson plays 28 characters in a masterclass of solo storytelling, shifting effortlessly between voices and mannerisms to keep you guessing.

The show isn’t just a retelling; it’s an experience. An immersive soundscape and eerie recorded voices pull audiences into Scrooge’s office, the Cratchit household and the darker corners of his lonely world. There’s humour, there’s heartbreak and there’s genuine suspense, moments that will have you smiling, shivering and holding your breath all at once.

More than a festive outing, this adaptation teases out the gothic undertones of Dickens’ tale, exploring its shadowy edges without losing sight of its warmth and joy. It’s storytelling that feels intimate, as if Robinson has invited the audience to gather around a fireside and whisper secrets of Christmas past and yet-to-come.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Dickens or discovering Scrooge for the first time (unlikely), this production promises to ease you into the Christmas spirit.
