Grindsmith has been on Deansgate for a few years now and have since opened up a third branch in Media City. Here beneath the shadow of Beetham Tower, vintage-looking stools nestle beneath school tables. Bare bulbs swing from extended wires, table lamps channel a utilitarian vibe and wooden packing crates have been turned into tables and (with the addition of cushions, presumably to avoid any awkward splinter moments) sofas. The food is a mix of artisan coffee, pastries and sandwiches. Coffee is served on entirely unnecessary wooden boards; it’s the sort of artful detail that could either push you into a caffeinated rage or leave you with a wry smile – depending on which side of hipster you find yourself.
