Castlefield Gallery, with its forward-thinking schedule of exhibitions, perfectly achieves the goals of this small but influential gallery. Established by artists in 1984, this vital arts space is the first public contemporary visual art gallery to have opened in Manchester and has gone on to become a key part of the North of England’s cultural fabric.

Over the past three decades, Castlefield Gallery alumni have included several Turner Prize-winning artists and nominees.

The gallery itself offers a public programme of exhibitions, projects and events at its main space on the edge of Manchester’s charming Castlefield district.

A self-proclaimed “artist-facing organisation”, Castlefield emphasise artist development, advocating for and supporting emerging creatives through the Castlefield Gallery Associates programme and other initiatives.

Recent exhibitions included a year-long programme to celebrate the gallery’s 40th anniversary, with two-artist shows chosen especially in order to complement one another’s work. Keep an eye on the website for news about upcoming shows and community events.

Castlefield’s cutting-edge programming continues to dazzle audiences, with the curators’ ability to stay ahead of the trends and introduce fresh perspectives to the local art scene.
