HOME, Manchester’s famous cross-arts venue, is a crown jewel when it comes to culture. You might not be able to tell just by looking at it from the outside, but this building is stocked to the brim with spaces ready and waiting to be filled with art in all its forms. There are two theatres, five cinema screens, a large gallery, restaurant, bar, café and bookshop. You might say HOME is something of a destination venue in the city.
Shaped like a wider, shinier version of its predecessor, Cornerhouse, and based just down the road at the heart of a wide-open plaza, HOME hosts an often innovative, challenging and unique programme of art, theatre and film.
This is the natural base for all things culture. One evening you might find yourself in the cinema, watching a classic black-and-white film brought back to the big screen. On your next visit, you could be exploring a new exhibition by a local artist or experiencing a one-man performance in the theatre. Every visit can be completely different.
There are also multiple dining options. On the ground floor, pop in for a coffee and a pastry, or even a hearty lunch before a mid-afternoon screening. The first-floor restaurant is highly recommended for a pre-theatre meal or even a Sunday roast. They do accept some walk-ins, but to save yourself possible disappointment, we’d advise booking in advance, just to be safe.
So if you’re tired of mainstream art and blockbuster films, or just want to try something a little more underground, HOME is well worth a visit — it’s the venue independent artists go to feel, well, at home.
