Hailed as something of a cry back ‘to the way the Northern Quarter used to be’, The Peer Hat is Old English styled and yet determinedly celebrates current grassroots musicians.

On ground level, there is a lively and decidedly unpretentious bar that serves reasonably priced craft ale, which you can sip while flicking through the great selection of records loaded into the jukebox.

While The Peet Hat often presents itself as a bar and live-music venue, it quietly – pardon the juxtaposition – hosts full-on basement club nights. Descend the perilously steep steps and you’ll find an intimate space decked out to hold live gigs with a focus on local talent.

Every few months, promoters run retro-electro or electronic open-mic takeovers well into the early hours. The Sound of the Crowd club night springs to mind here, where DJs spin New Wave, Italo and synthpop. Something for everyone, but I guess that is the intention.

So whether you’re after a sophisticated English pub or a not-so-sophisticated night that runs into the early hours, The Peer Hat is just the place. They even have a motto: Omnia sub petasum – translation: “Everyone under the hat”. Make of that what you will.
