Famous as the oldest working men’s club in Britain, The Holbeck in Leeds has been serving the local community for nearly 150 years. First opened in 1877, it was a pioneer of its time, first opening to women in 1959 and later rebranding from The Holbeck WMC to ‘The Holbeck’ to reflect its modernisation as a social club. Open not just to members, but also guests and club affiliates, it sits at the heart of the local community and is home to a number of regular events, from motown nights to weekly bingo.

Formerly managed by Holbeck theatre company Slung Low (2019 to 2022), during this time it was run as a pay what you decide arts and community space, functioning as a rehearsal room, theatre, food bank, gallery, town square, and whatever else its residents decided. Then in December 2022 Slung Low handed the site to the elected committee of members, directly ensuring the club’s continued ownership by its community for generations to come.

Today, it is home to a performance and events space, and a traditional members’ bar, with a kitchen serving breakfasts, teas, and traditional Sunday roasts with all the trimmings. Known for its affordable drinks, family-friendly atmosphere, and a versatile events space that plays host to everything from live music to bingo, it is a certified Holbeck community favourite for a reason. Expect to find everything from Motown nights to stand up comedy, weekly bingo, and community gatherings on offer here.

The venue is also known for its accessible spaces, which include a ramped entrance, lift to its performance space, toilets, and baby changing facilities. A super hub for Leeds‘ community of artists and makers, The Holbeck offers a place where locals and visitors can come and share a drink, some food, and experience a taste of the local community. Situated on the cusp of the city centre, it’s a must visit for a true taste of Leeds.

The Holbeck is also a popular choice with Leeds United and away fans ahead of match days at Elland Road, with £1 coaches normally waiting outside to take you to the ground after a hearty breakfast.
