Pudsey is a Victorian market town, and so this small but perfectly-formed market is charmingly traditional, featuring everything from second-hand books, fabrics and gloriously fresh local foodstuff.
Found just outside of the centre of Leeds, this is one of the most traditional markets you can visit in the Leeds area – harking it back to the Victorian days. Serving a loyal roster of customers from the community over generations, the small but perfectly formed market opens three times a week and has all the things you might expect – plus a few extra little surprises.
Home to a fine range of independent stalls, find everything from fruit and freshly baked cakes, to books, craft materials, artwork, bedding, curtains and more. On the first Sunday of the month, the town also hosts a popular produce and craft market that has been running for nearly a decade. Here, shoppers can browse stalls from local makers and growers, with over thirty stalls selling everything from candles and cheese to organic, locally-grown veggies, and sweet treats.
Beyond its markets, the wider town of Pudsey also has some fantastic shops, pubs, and cafes nearby. If you’ve got some time to explore the area, make sure to visit The Cheesy Living Co., a cheesemongers meets modern deli located just around the corner, where you can enjoy cheesy treats including their famous fondue with a good cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
The market has long been a core part of the town’s identity alongside the textile making industry, with records of its roots in the trade dating back to the 13th century. Dedicated textile mills first appeared in the town from 1782 to 1962, with Pudsey making its name as the chief export of the 15 towns supplying the textile markets of Leeds, Bradford and Halifax at the time.
Located midway between Leeds and Bradford city centre, the market town caters to a wide range of West Yorkshire residents as well as providing some fascination to visiting tourists in the area. If you are taking a trip up, make sure to also check out Pudsey Park, which is one of Leeds’ most popular and is packed with fun things to see and do.
