Every serious city needs a good comic book shop, and in OK Comics Leeds has one of the North’s finest. Forget comic book guy from The Simpsons, here you’ll find helpful friendly staff and a vast selection of comics and graphic novels, ranging from top-sellers to the painfully obscure.

Stocking a huge variety of comic books, graphic novels, magazines, and manga, this super cool specialist book shop inside Thornton’s Arcade, and is also occasionally home to a lovely little shop dog called Judy. Located at the heart of Leeds city centre’s retail district, whether you’re looking for the latest super hero adventure or something a little more unusual, this is the place to be.

Graphic novel fans will be in their here element too, with award-winning favourites like Persepolis

Split across two floors, as well as an extensive collection of contemporary works, in its upstairs library you’ll find a huge collection of older comics dating as far back as the 1950s – with popular genres spanning crime, horror, biographies, history, genre issues, and music.

Graphic novel fans will be in their here element too, with award-winning favourites like Persepolis (an autobiographical series by Marjane Satraoi that recounts her childhood in Iran during and after the revolution), and Art Spiegelman’s Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (depicting him interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor) present on the shelves.

The latest adventures of Batman and Spider man, and everything in between.

OK Comics is also known for its pioneering free graphic novel library lending service, which offers an unlimited stream of new materials at no cost to the reader at all. Stocking both newly released monthly issues and classic back date comics too, you’ll also find interesting magazines about comics on sale here too.

Look a little closer, and discover great independent books like Lichen, In Waves, and Nao of Brown, alongside the latest adventures of Batman and Spider man, and everything in between. For those who don’t want to miss a release, OK Comics offers a free regular order service and ships these to fans all over the globe. It also has an online shop, although – considering this depicts just a fraction of what is available in the store – if you’re in Leeds, you’re better off popping into the store for the full picture.

Theatre in Manchester and the North
Theatre in the North

This season’s theatre is gloriously eclectic: from radical cabaret and reinvented classics to new musicals and boundary-pushing performance.

Exhibitions in the North

Chocolate fountains, beautiful batiks and medieval marginalia - this month's supersized Exhibitions Guide has it all.

Literature Events in the North

The autumn leaves might be falling already, but the harvest is plentiful as the live literature scene gets back into the swing of things after a summer break...

Cinema in the North

This month we recommend a season of Film noir, cult Australian movies and a huge celebration of DIY community cinema.
