Leeds Town Hall

Leeds Town Hall currently closed for refurbishment.
Leeds Town Hall is famously one of the largest town halls in the United Kingdom. It is a Grade I listed building that in recent years has been used for concerts, weddings and commercial events.
Closed to the public since 2021 as part of a huge £19.8 million refurbishment, the Town Hall is scheduled to reopen in late 2025 or Spring 2026 following the completion of the project. Works currently being undertaken here include the restoration of the original pipe organ in Victoria Hall, which is said to be one of the biggest organs of its kind in Europe.
First opened in 1858 by Queen Victoria herself, the 19th century municipal building sits on The Headrow in Leeds city centre. Whilst visitors cannot currently go inside, they can stop by to ogle its exterior.
Initially designed to include law courts, a council chamber, public hall, offices, and a suite of ceremonial rooms, the Town Hall was constructed over the course of five years to a design created by local architect Cuthbert Brodrick. In more recent years, prior to its closure, it was used as a popular gig and event hub – welcoming shows from big pop names including The Beatles, Elton John, and U2, as well as classic stars including Yehudi Menuhin, Claudio Abbado, and Zubin Mehta.
When it reopens to the public later this year, it will boast some exciting new features designed to transform the concert and event facilities at the historic hall. There’ll be a brand new entrance, box office, and bar for visitors to enjoy, whilst structural works will see the conservation and repair of some of the building’s unique heritage features including its stone masonry, plasterwork, and original doors.
The refurbishment will allow Leeds Town Hall to host a bigger and wider offering of events throughout the year, in turn generating more income for the council and the wider local economy to support the area. It will also lead to a comprehensive new social value programme of acitivities, which will benefit the local community in and around Leeds.
A magnificent Leeds landmark and a key piece of the city’s history, mark your calendars for its reopening and make sure to pay the new and improved hall a visit.
