Head of Steam

Head of Steam is a pub in the Mill Hill area of Leeds, featuring an impressive range of ales from all over the world as well as frequent in-house events to keep you on your toes and is just a 5-minute walk from Leeds Train Station. The local favourite first opened here in 2014, replacing the former Spencer’s pub following a takeover by North East brewery Cameron’s.
Range of British cask ales and a sizeable list of draught Belgian beers
Housed in one of the oldest parts of Leeds, Head of Steam is a CAMRA recommended pub known for its eclectic selection of craft beers and real ales, boasting five regular beers and four rotating guest pumps showcasing local favourites alongside international imports. As you may have already guessed from its name, it’s somewhat unique in that the brand focuses on sites near railway stations – and has seen significant expansion since its takeover by Cameron’s in 2013.
Housed in an attractive three storey stone and brick pub, inside you’ll find an octagonal island bar that hosts beers from all around the world – including a solid range of British cask ales and a sizeable list of draught Belgian beers, too. Expect to find plenty of high percentage beers packed full of flavour, and plenty of seating options: from a live music alcove hosting jazz every Sunday, to an upstairs balcony, raised area to the pub’s rear, and a few intimate tables scattered close to the bar.
Originally dreamt up by Tony and Carolyn Brookes in 1995, the brand has grown hugely – expanding from three pubs to 16 in the last decade under the stewardship of Cameron’s Brewery. As well as being known for its great selection of craft beers and real ales, it also caters to non-beer drinkers with a good variety of wines, cocktails, and spirit mixers on offer, and serves an all-day crowd pleasing menu of gastro pub classics.
If you’re feeling peckish, either opt for a snack (the hot pork scratchings are a house favourite for a reason), or go all-out with a slap up meal. From burger and pizzas to loaded hotdogs, there’s plenty to get stuck into here. A must for self respecting beer lovers in Leeds, make sure to put Head of Steam on your list.
