If you were planning a trip to Cumbria, the classic port of call would likely be the Lake District. But if you head further north, you’ll be rewarded with a quiet, comfortable stay at Farlam Hall, tucked away in the market town of Brampton.

Farlam Hall boasts 12 bedrooms plus six sprawling suites fashioned from old stable blocks. These stables are now Grade 2 listed buildings. While this is impressive enough, the estate had a major renovation during the pandemic and invited Michelin-starred Hrishikesh Desai into the fold as chef patron in February 2023. These changes have brought Farlam into a new era.

Offering uncomplicated luxury, this idyllic hotel has everything you need to unwind. There are cosy country rooms, expansive grounds you can wander at your leisure (make sure you visit the fabulous kitchen garden) and quality food made from the freshest ingredients at the on-site restaurant.

The meticulously designed dining room rotates between two restaurants. The Cedar Tree serves up refined yet hearty breakfasts each morning (the salmon and scrambled eggs comes highly recommended) and a Michelin-starred seven-course tasting menu from Wednesday to Saturday. Farlam Hall’s second restaurant, Bistro Enkel, offers a more casual dining experience with starters, mains and desserts from Sunday to Tuesday. Both prove exceptional.

While it’s worth the trip for the restaurant alone, for the full experience, opt for an overnight stay. The rooms and suites of Farlam Hall are breathtaking and finished with luxurious touches at every turn. Think high ceilings, fresh flowers, antique furniture and stunning views. You’d be forgiven for hibernating in your room for your entire stay.

If that wasn’t enough, you get some top-tier homemade shortbread to go with your ample supplies of teas and coffees, as well as a fluffy bathrobe and matching slippers. There are Molton Brown toiletries for you to get stuck into too.

If you do decide to stretch your legs, the Farlam Hall team will be delighted to make recommendations on walks and trails. It’s just 16 minutes away from Hadrian’s Wall and surrounded by glorious countryside, meaning you can enjoy panoramic views right on the doorstep.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a luxury date night, Farlam Hall is the perfect country escape.
