Yana and the Yeti at The Met
Gemma Gibb, Associate Editor
Lucky for us that internationally renowned puppetry legends Pickled Image bring their latest show to The Met this half term after a recent sell-out run of shows down south.
Written by Olivier-nominated Hattie Naylor and aimed at ages five and above, we are promised a hauntingly beautiful Nordic wonderland and memorable tale of the most special kind of friendship.
Yana arrives alone in a remote snowy village, surrounded by dense forest, where she doesn’t speak the language and is shunned by the local children. Lost in the forest, she meets a Yeti baby and they form a heart-warming friendship.
Expect marvelous music and stunning set design which cleverly plays with a sense of scale – incorporating bird’s-eye views together with detailed, up-close extraordinary puppets.
A beautiful adventure tale of being an outsider (with all the topical nods to personal experiences of immigration), and finding happiness through putting aside initial preconceptions (fear of a scary Yeti!).
Ultimately too, Yana and the Yeti celebrates the inner strength of being determined to be understood.
