Created by Sheffield-based theatre makers The Bare Project, Walking with Delight is an audio walking experience taking place in Cheetham Hill.

Manchester’s historic Jewish quarter, Cheetham Hill offers a rich history and a myriad of stories. Perhaps the narrative most often remembered and retold are the ones of wars; of poverty and hardship; of racism, pandemics and suffering, silver-lined with tales of heroes and triumph in the face of adversity.

The stories shared explore everyday experiences and wonderful personal moments.

These monumental events and tragedies are well documented elsewhere – Walking with Delight offers participants a different perspective – a closer look at the rarer and more unique stories. Created with the oral testimonies of the Jewish community of Cheetham Hill, the stories shared on this audio journey explore everyday experiences and wonderful personal moments. Described as ‘stories of love and delight’, the audio walk aims to capture and celebrate these stories as a new way of exploring the history of Cheetham Hill. Dating back to the 1920s, the stories have been curated and archived by the Manchester Jewish Museum and form the basis of the project.

An audio journey offering an insight into the history of Manchester’s most diverse neighbourhood.

The walk will involve travelling approximately one mile and participants will be required to wear headphones. In line with Covid-19 guidelines, all necessary precautions will be taken to protect participants, including sanitisation of headphones.

Join The Bare Project as they take you on an immersive audio journey that offers an insight into the history of Manchester’s most diverse neighbourhood through new, and previously unheard, perspectives. Learn more about the (extra) ordinary people who have walked these streets, and also, more importantly – how we can use these stories to enrich our own communities.

A busy image created using generative AI. The image depicts a man at the centre with grey hair and rosy cheeks, surrounding him are fairies that appear to be created in his own image with multiple limbs and unique bodily proportions. Around them are hundreds of vials, microscopes and dated scientific equipment.
