The Tetley Makers’ Market: Sustainable Summer Edition
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions EditorMarkets are usually the perfect place to find hidden handmade gems, search for birthday gifts and get to know local businesses better. This summer The Tetley Makers’ Market is all of this and a little bit more too – in its sustainable edition, the event will be filled to the brim with free family activities and workshops promoting practical eco ideas that you can adopt in your every day life.
Pop in between 11-3 (on both days) to make your own environmentally friendly Wax Wrap, a kitchen essential that makes for a brilliant alternative to its plastic predecessor. And whilst we’re in the kitchen, on Sunday Head Chef Jade Crawley will hold a Summer Cooking food demo with a special focus on low-waste practices.
In the spirit of no waste, the Market will also include the Leeds Repair Cafe where you can bring any clothes, jewellery, electricals and computers in need of fixing so take a look around for any broken chains and phones in need of an expert’s eye.
If you fancy some mindful exercise, book in for a session of Sunshine Yoga on the Tetley’s brand new terrace, while artist Emily Binks will host her Makers’ Lab welcoming families for creative, hands-on fun. You can even get a flash tattoo by artist Finn, whose lovely designs celebrate all things summery and natural. All of the events will be accompanied by live music throughout the weekend so you can take a break from doing, relax and just enjoy the atmosphere.
That’s not all though! As well as these fabulous activities to keep your hands busy, your taste buds will be satisfied too. Head Chef Jade’s vegetarian menu will be served on Saturday, while on Sunday you can get honour the weekly tradition and enjoy a delicious roast.
Of course, we can’t forget about the stars of any market – the stall holders themselves, and creators of the handmade jewellery, homeware, candles, prints and original artworks that will all be available for sale. To name just a few from a long list of stalls: Beth Daborn Designs creates trendy, charming prints in an instantly recognisable style; KiJo Jewellery offers stylish minimalist accessories; and Little Shop of Lathers specialises in handmade bath and body products from natural ingredients.
Don’t miss this lovely (and sustainable!) weekend event filled with something for every taste. Take a look at the website for more details, especially if you’d like to book the Sunshine Yoga session.
