Manchester is a city with many stories hidden beneath the surface, you just have to know where to look. Jonathan Scofield’s tour Sleazy, Sinister and Haunted Manchester takes you deep into the shadows, unearthing a side of the city that rarely sees the light of day.

The tour begins at Manchester Cathedral which in itself sets the tone for the tour that follows. The Gothic architecture holds eerie tales, with locals often recalling strange sightings within its walls, from the legends of a headless hound who haunts the grounds to unexplainable apparitions behind its doors.

As you venture deeper into the city, ordinary looking streets where once the location of rampant Victorian crime and rival youth gangs known as Scuttlers. With a long standing reputation in Manchester, these 19th century turf wars often spilled into public spaces and newspapers making them very well known in the community.

Despite the grim themes, this tour is not all about horror stories of ghosts and scary gangsters. The guide will balance the dark with moments of levity and human resilience. After hearing about the hardships of the past, Manchester’s bright future will appear all the more impressive. Seeing how it has transformed over time and kept the darkness, truly contributes to the city’s vivid character.

This tour will leave you with a richest sense of Manchester’s complexities and knowledge that every street has a story to tell.
