The RNCM’s Young Explorers series of family-friendly events blasts off this season with a thrilling galactic adventure soundtracked by one of the most successful contesting brass bands in the world.

The Young Explorers series has been running for many years now, and for good reason – it’s an absolute hit with kids. The aim of the game here is to introduce children to orchestral music in a fun and interactive environment, free of any ‘serious’ concert etiquette that might make younger kids feel like music is a ‘got to’ rather than a ‘get to’.

The next event is a rather special one, featuring Stockport’s KNDS Fairey Band. Founded in 1937, the band has won every elite band event on the contest calendar, including the British Open an incredible 16 times. But here, they’ll be doing something a little different. As well as music from classical masterpieces like Holst’s The Planets, they’ll perform beloved soundtracks of space-inspired video games like Super Mario and Space Invaders.

Between performances, your host Mike Poyser will unveil exciting science demonstrations and share interesting insights about science, space and music. There’ll even be a retro video game arcade to play on before or after the concert, if all those 8-bit tunes get you in the mood for a more hands-on intergalactic experience.

Speaking of something more hands-on… This event also has an accompanying workshop that families can sign-up for, based around the fascinating intersection of nature and sound. Read more about that here.
